He’s got a new home!

On the 24/07/2016 this little Shih Tzu was brought into via the out of hours Animal Wardens for Bolton Council. When he arrived he was heavily matted with an infected cut on his head.384527

He wasn’t ID chipped and no one has come forward to claim him. During his 7 days we’ve clipped him and treated him for the infected cut. He has made fantastic progress during that time.Benedicts 3yrs

And on the 01/08/2016 ‘Benedict’ the name we gave him went up for adoption and has found a new home.

We will look forward to staying in touch with his new owners and monitoring his progress.DSCF5379

We would like to wish Benedict and his new family all the best for the future!

We would like to say another huge thank you to Doris Banham Rescue for taking on these two guys!

Sharon with Lou from Doris Banham

Lou was brought into us originally through St Helens dog wardens on 20/06/2016 Lou was ID chipped but unfortunately we weren’t able to get in touch with registered people on her micro chip. After her 7 days Lou went up for adoption on 27/06/2016 unfortunately during that time no one has offered Lou a home, so we’ve contacted Trudie of Doris Banham Rescue and she has kindly offered Lou a place with them.

Update on Tallulah

Here’s an update on Tallulah a Dogue de Bordeaux adopted from ourselves.

She was IMG_2080brought into us due to her owner not being well enough to care for her anymore.IMG_2075

IMG_2085The very next day Jackie and Liv decided to give her a home and have been very kind as to stay in touch with us on a regular basis!

Its great to see Tallulah thriving in such a loving caring home!

We couldn’t of wished for a better home for Tallulah and will look forward to staying in touch will Jackie and Liv!

Everyone here at Leigh Cats and Dogs Home would like to wish Jackie, Liv and Tallulah all the best for the future!

Sign Posts to the Home

We have had a couple of people get in touch concerned that the signs to the Home from the main road have been disappearing. Just to clear things up…..

Wigan Council have decided that the Home no longer fits the criteria required to have a Brown ‘Tourist’ sign directing people to us so they have covered them up. From what we can gather this is simply because we don’t have a Cafe! (although we do have a nice coffee machine!)

It is just these that have been removed and all other signage is still there and we are still here and open as usual and look forward to seeing you in the future!

Update on Smooch

Remember me???

Here’s an update on Smooch the mastiff who was brought into us via the St Helens dog wardens on 24th June. Unfortunately Smooch was not ID chipped and nobody came forward to claim him.

IMG_2810 (1)After his 7 day period he was assessed by the vet and then neutered. Smooch was then rehomed on 7th July to a family that live on a farm!IMG_2796

His new owners have kindly kept in touch with us and given us regular updates on his progress and also sent us a few pictures.IMG_2837 (1)

Free Microchipping Saturday – 23rd July 12.00-5.00pm

As you may know as of the 6th April it is now the law to have your dog micro-chipped.

As we are still finding that a lot of the dogs that have come into us aren’t microchipped, we would like to help, so we are offering free micro chipping for Dogs

on Saturday 23rd July 12.00-5.00pm.

No appointment necessary!

Case Study – Microchipping Part 4

We thought it would be interesting to share the current situation with found dogs and microchipping so that there is some understanding as to what Dog Wardens and shelters are up against when trying to reunite dogs and see how this changes over the coming months.

Example: West Lancs area

During May there were 7 dogs seized by the wardens

Out of these 7 dogs, 5 were microchipped.

Of the 5 microchipped dogs, 3 had up to date owner information registered.

This means that less than half of the dogs seized were ‘legal’

During May there were 10 ’21 day notice’ letters issued on behalf of Wigan Council to owners of dogs that are incorrectly registered.

All 10 of these have exceeded 21 days and have been followed up.

ONLY 3 HAD BEEN UPDATED and the rest seemingly ignored, leaving the owners liable to large fines. It is a pity that people are still not taking the law seriously.

The microchipping databases will charge between £5.00 and £18.00 to update your details, which in most cases you will only ever pay once, even if you change address several times after. The fine for not updating details can be up to £500.00. It really is a no-brainer!

If your dog is not microchipped yet do not panic but it is the LAW so take       action now and take them to your vet or have it done here for £12.50.             We can also advise on updating microchips, please feel free to call.
